Illinois: History, Facts, and Cities
History Illinois has a rich history dating back to its earliest Native American inhabitants. The Illinois Confederation, which included the Kaskaskia, Cahokia, and Peoria tribes, were the largest group in the area. They were skilled farmers and hunters and traded with other tribes in the region. In the 1600s, French explorers arrived in the area, led by Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. He claimed the area for France and named it after the Illiniwek tribe. In the 1700s, the British took control of Illinois after defeating the French in the French and Indian War. Later, during the American Revolution, Illinois was a strategic location for both sides. The British held control of the area until 1778 when American forces, led by George Rogers Clark, captured the British forts in the region. In 1818, Illinois became the 21st state to join the Union. During the 1800s, Illinois grew rapidly, thanks in part to the development of the railroad. The city of Chicago became a major transportation hub, and its population exploded. The state also played a significant role in the Civil War, with thousands of soldiers from Illinois fighting for the Union. Facts
